Switchfoot returns to the Magic City, Celebrates 20 Years

Switchfoot, Grammy award winning band, will be returning to Minot to headline the 10th annual Rock the Leaves, Aug. 18-20. This will be the band’s second time playing at the event and we can’t wait to experience what they have for us this year.

This author first came to know Switchfoot from the iconic Mandy Moore movie, “A Walk to Remember,” where the songs “Dare You to Move” and “Only Hope” taught my teenage heart how to feel. But the band actually started six years earlier in 1996 and was signed by a Christian Contemporary label.

They toiled along in relative obscurity to the secular world and released three albums, the most popular of which was “Learning to Breath.” Following a surge in popularity that came in the wake of “A Walk to Remember” the band was signed to Columbia Records and began producing albums for a more secular audience.

You may remember such songs as the perennial slow dance hit “Dare You to Move” and turn-your-radio-up-and-sing favorite “Meant to Live,” well, that album went on to sell 2.6 million copies. One of which I owned.

Switchfoot is known for its energetic and entertaining live performances. They’ll be performing on the mainstage of the event along with other headliners Big Daddy Weave and Plumb.

If you struggle to remember a time without Switchfoot, you actually wouldn’t be wrong. The band has been around for 20 years this year and has remained largely intact, growing several years ago to include a guitarist that had traveled with the band through many shows.

It’s a band that easy to support and cheer on, made up of friends and two brothers, lead vocalist Jon Foreman and backing vocals/bass guitarist Tim Foreman. They seem to like each other and treat one another like family. Together they’ve survived jumping record labels and going independent, then back on a label.

The band is releasing their latest album “Where the Light Shines Through” this July. So hopefully they’ll be bringing some new of their new music along with their hits.
